| INDONESIAN PENCAK SILAT GENERAL INFORMATION Pencak Silat is the broad term for the martial arts of Indonesia. (Pencak) refers to fluidity, or Bungah flower movement. (Silat) refers to the self defense application of the movement. It is a warriors system for Physical, Mental, and Spiritual health. In Indonesia usually every village and every family practice a form of Pencak Silat. For centuries the secrets of this well guarded mystical, magickal martial art have been practiced behind closed doors by practioners of the Royal Courts. It is still very hard if not impossible to find a (Traditional) Pencak Silat School in Indonesia. I say traditional, because in some areas and organizations they are turning Pencak Silat into a sport. Real, Authentic, and Traditional Pencak Silat was practiced by families and villages for survival as a way of life. Not for Sport! Training consists of solo and partner practice, using percussion instruments (Gamelan) as background music. Techniques and training vary with different styles, but some common training aspects include; Jurus (upperbody), Lankah (lowerbody), Bungha (flowerdance), Sambutan (fighting), Ilmu (magick), Kebatinan (spiritual), and a variety of Weapons, including the Kris (Indonesian Pusaka).
